How Long do People Spend in one Place?
Test Effectiveness of Displays, Log Waiting Time, etc
With Biodata's new Dwell Meter you can see how long customers spend in an area and how often an area was visited. For example, a store could test the effectiveness of new displays, discovering how many people paused to look at the display and for how long. They could also compare one display with a another and evaluate new store layouts. No customer wants to spend time queuing and a Dwell Meter accurately monitors and reports waiting times at counters and checkouts. This information can be used to make decisions on opening more or fewer facilities.
The Dwell Meter is part of Biodata's Video Turnstile people counting system. Using an overhead camera it detects a person entering and leaving a zone. Windows software supplied with the system (called Windmill) reads data from the dwell meter, in real-time if necessary.
You can choose the length of time over which to record visits, and have differing intervals. For example, you could count the number of people visiting a zone every 2 seconds for the first 24 seconds then every 10 seconds for the next 2 minutes. For other applications you might choose 3 minute intervals to start with, followed by 5 minutes.
Data can be analysed with almost any software, including Microsoft Excel. We offer the low-cost VisualTrends Lite, or can supply the full-blown version, Visual Trends, which enables you to view results over the Internet. With all of these you can produce histograms showing how many people stayed for how long. The example above shows 122 people who were just passing through the zone and stayed for less than 2 seconds, 119 people stayed for 2-4 seconds, 86 people stayed for 4-6 seconds, and so on.
Depending on your settings, you can show results for an hour, a day or some other time interval. It's easy to add results together, so if you decide that your original time intervals were too short you can just combine intervals together for another view.
