Positioning the Counting Zone

You can change the position and size the counting zone. When you do this you might like to connect the VT Unit to a TV Monitor so you can see exactly where the counting zone is. (If you need to, change the focal length setting, camera height and video format before adjusting the counting zone. This is because zone widths differ depending on lenses and camera heights. Click here for a table of zone widths.)

  1. Go to the Logger Setup tab and choose the controlling Logger from the Unit Address list.
  2. Select the VT setup tab. More tabs appear.
  3. Identify the VT module and choose its address in the Select VT tab.
  4. If you are working with a VT module that is not the first in the list then the software needs to read its settings. You can do this in two ways: either click the Tune button, or move to the Settings tab and click button 1 Read settings from module. This might take a few moments. When you do this your VT module stops counting and its count lights flash.
  5. If you want to view the zone on a monitor, select the Camera/Video Out tab. Make sure your selected VT unit is ticked to show that it is connected to a video output.
  6. Select the Zone tab.
  7. Positioning the counting zoneUse the Move and Resize buttons to change the size and position of the counting zone. The markers (see picture below) cover the full width of the region where people transit. The general direction of movement should be up or down the screen on the video from the VT module. The lines should be far enough apart so that people do not cover both markers simultaneously. The red and green lines show the size of a person.
  8. Choose whether the Reference line is to be at the top or the bottom. The reference line is the one which the visitor must cross to be counted. For example the line of a doorway or the start of a stairway. (See the picture below.)
  9. Use the Move and Resize buttons to change the size and position of the counting zone. Check that
    • The markers cover the full width of the region where people transit
    • The general direction of movement is up or down the screen on the video from the VT module
    • The lines are far enough apart so that people do not cover both markers simultaneously. (Red and green lines show the size of a person.)
  10. If you want to count people who go right or left after entering, or who enter from the right or left to cross the reference line, click the Side Counts buttons. These display side exit lines. If the Reference line is at the bottom people will be counted if they enter through the bottom line and exit through the top line or the parts of the sides shown by the bars. The bars won't quite reach the Reference line, as a visitor must at least get into the zone before being counted. For example, if you were monitoring the top of an escalator then visitors would cross the bottom Reference line as they stepped off the escalator, and would then fan-out: going forward or to either side.
  11. Click the Apply to VT button.

To find out the actual width of the zone in metres or feet, go to the SelectVT tab and click the Tune button.

In the screen above, a person is moving up the screen and will be counted when they enter at the bottom and exit at the top, the left or the right. The red and green lines on the zone display (not shown on the picture above), indicate the selected values for the maximum and minimum person size.
